Should we break up or get married?

Question:

My boyfriend and I have been fornicating. We decided to repent of this. We’ve asked friends, men of God, about what to do next. They say we should break up or get married. We are too young to marry so breaking up is the only left solution.

The thing is, we love each other. I am at peace with the breaking up solution because I have hope we will get back in the future as we work on ourselves individually. But he’s hurting and not at peace with the decision. He is asking for another chance because he can’t bear losing me and finding another.

We’ve been together for a year. We’ve talked about marriage together. What should we do?.

Answer:

My difficulty in answering is due to the lack of information. I only know what you’ve told me, which isn’t much. I don’t know your ages or what country you live in, so I don’t know if your conclusion that you are too young to get married is accurate or not. Nor do I know what steps you’ve taken to stop your fornication and whether you’ve been successful.

Paul’s advise was, “But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (I Corinthians 7:9). What I have nothing to judge is whether that self-control is present or not.
