How can I be in stage 4 when I don’t remember having a growth spurt?

Question:

I went to the doctor yesterday and she said I’m 5’5 in height, but I went to a dermatologist last year and the doctor said I was 5’6. I don’t understand how I could be 5’5. My mom is 4’10 and my dad is 5’5 too, but I’m a little taller than him. I haven’t seen a change in my height yet, at least I don’t think so. I’m 16 yrs old. Did I have a growth spurt? Can I still get a growth spurt as I get older? My breasts don’t seem to be done growing either. I used your Tanner Stage Calculator and got an answer of 4.6.

Answer:

My guess is that you are between 5’5″ and 5’6″. One doctor rounded the answer up and the other rounded it down. At 16 and at your height, it would be unusual not to be where you are without having gone through a growth spurt. More likely it happened when you were young and not paying all that much attention to the changes that were happening to you. The Tanner Stage Calculator confirms that there are numerous other signs that you are nearing the end of your development. You might put on up to an inch more, but that will be about it.
