Is it a concern that my blood flow is a dark brown color?

Question:

I’m a 14-year-old girl, and I just got my first period a few months ago. I didn’t get it again for a few months, but then I noticed that instead of having a normal blood flow, I had this brownish discharge that is happening once a month. So I’m really confused. Is this normal?

Answer:

Your blood flow can change color. A dark brown color toward the end of a period is considered normal. The blood is older and therefore darker at that point, especially if you had an heavier than usual flow that month.

If the blood is consistently a darker color, it is recommended that you have it checked. It is likely nothing important, but there are some problems that this can be a symptom.
